HOPS, WATER, YEAST AND MALT
The only things that belong in a good beer are hops, water, yeast and malt.
That's the credo of the Purity Law passed in 1516. The Salzburg brewery draws its water from the local mountain, the Untersberg. Stiegl has the great fortune to be able to use the Untersberg's spring water which is of such exceptional quality and purity that it can be drawn directly from the ground.
The selection of other raw materials is matter for the boss himself at the Stiegl Brewery. The owner and master brewer drive out to the fields every year to check the quality of the brewing barley and hops before they are harvested. A premium quality beer can only brewed by using top quality raw ingredients, so in order to assure this quality Stiegl began working closely with domestic farmers, with whom they determined quality standards many years ago.
Stiegl acquires its brewing barley from Austria's Weinviertel region and from the brewery’s own organic farm in the Upper Austrian Wildshut region. A large part of the hops comes from the Mühlviertel region. In order to be able to brew exclusively with Austrian hops in future Stiegl has secured long-term supply contracts with the Mühlviertel hop growers. The ultimate goal is for all ingredients for Stiegl beer to come from Austria by the year 2012!
