Stiegl horses
WE LOVE AND LIVE OUR TRADITIONS.
The Stiegl brewery in Salzburg has made deliveries by horse and cart since 1492. Our Tiger Norikers are still hitched up to the beer deliveries cart every day to supply fresh beer to the restaurants around the brewery (in the Maxglan and Riedenburg city districts, and in Wals-Siezenheim).
In addition, our four dray horses - Amadeus, Prinz, Remos and Friedl all see service, as well as at traditional events and festivals. During the Salzburg Festival period they draw the wagon for the Salzburger Strassentheater (street theatre); in traditional competitions, they demonstrate their strength and skill; and of course they also participate in the Salzburger Dult (Whitsunday festival).
For over 400 years this resilient mountain dray horse has been thorough-bred in Salzburg. The oldest studbook was issued in 1903 by the horse-breeding association of the Salzburg region of Pinzgau. At this time, Stiegl was primarily transported by Noriker horses. The Tiger Norikers arose from a combination of the warmblood horses used by Roman legionaries and the horses from the province of Noricum (modern Bavaria and Austria).
