A family business for
many generations
We are a private brewery with a long tradition in beer culture. For around 530 years, sustainability, regional focus, local added value, and above all the quality of our beers and services have come first. However, this quality is only possible if we exclusively use the best domestic ingredients at our brewery. The values we feel obligated to fulfill since the brewery’s founding in 1492 have made us Austria’s leading private brewer.
The success of the brewery is inseparably tied to the name Kiener. For more than 120 years, the brewery has been in the hands of the Kiener family and since the end of the 1990s, Dr. Heinrich Dieter Kiener (III) has led the business.
During this time, Stiegl developed from a small regional brewery to Austria’s leading private brewery. As a “free entrepreneur,” Heinrich Dieter Kiener assumes responsibility to promote a sound, regional business culture that secures over 700 job opportunities across Austria. Using domestic raw ingredients and handling natural resources respectfully is our highest priority. And standing in the foreground of all dealings is an appreciative approach toward customers, suppliers, and employees. Since it is not only in relation to beer that we strive for the highest quality and thus the art of brewing at its highest level.

The management of the company business Stiegl forms a trefoil of experienced leadership with distinct expertise in each respective area. What unites them all are the Stiegl values, which each of them applies in their field of action. We set upon ourselves to operate in a way that ensures our grandchildren’s future, meaning that – in all of our activities – we have the needs of today’s generation in perspective without jeopardizing the opportunities of future ones.
Decisions are always made in conjunction with the owner family Kiener and in close coordination with the relevant teams, which are guided by sustainability, humanness, regionalism, and trust. Because one thing is clear to us: “Good things need a vision.”

We are the first brewery in Austria to operate its own organic farm and a circular economy at our Stiegl-Gut Wildshut, the first beer farm in Austria. We nurture the soil, conduct research on the composition of humus, cultivate long-forgotten ancient grains. We are the only brewery in Austria to malt them ourselves, using them to brew our Wildshut beer specialties, thus creating the art of brewing at the highest level on the Salzburg state border. In developing new recipes at the Stiegl-Gut Wildshut and in experimenting with various grain varieties as well as special malting, our first concern is utmost enjoyment and unparalleled diversity of beer.
This standard is fulfilled in the delicious perfection of the very special Wildshut beers. And naturally, the experiences from the Stiegl-Gut Wildshut benefit the Stiegl Brewery in Salzburg’s Maxglan district.
About 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of the city of Salzburg – where Salzburg, Upper Austria, and Bavaria meet – Austria’s “First Beer Farm” opened in 2012. Naturally, this idyllic beer farm can also be visited, where you can enjoy the Wildshut specialties at the in-house corner shop.
